Xian
Xi’an is one of the oldest and most important cities in China. It’s the capital of Shaanxi Province, located in central-northwest China. Long ago, it was called Chang’an, and it was the capital city for many ancient Chinese dynasties. The city is most famous for the Terracotta Army, thousands of life-sized clay soldiers buried with Emperor Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China. It’s one of the world’s greatest archaeological discoveries. Xi’an was also the starting point of the Silk Road, the ancient trade route that connected China with Europe and the Middle East. Because of this, the city became a mix of cultures, religions, and people. You can still see many ancient sites in Xi’an, like the Ancient City Wall, which you can walk or bike on, and the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, a famous Buddhist temple. The Muslim Quarter is a lively area in the old city with lots of street food, markets, and a strong Islamic influence. It’s a great place to try local dishes like biangbiang noodles and roujiamo (a Chinese-style burger). Today, Xi’an is a modern city with fast trains, an airport, and tall buildings—but its long history is still everywhere. It’s a great place to visit if you want to see both ancient China and modern China in one place.
